What to Say When They Criticize Your Weight Loss Journey
This might sound wild, but it really happens: When you start doing great with your weight loss journey, looking great, feeling great, getting closer to your goal weight… you might have friends, family, co-workers or others criticize you or unknowingly put doubt in your mind by saying things like, “You’re looking too skinny! Are you OK??” or “Are you dieting again? You don’t need to lose weight!” when the truth is, you have 55 more pounds to go.
These comments and questions could put doubt in your mind especially if you’re shaky in your commitment to your weight loss goals and have a habit of using excuses to overeat and emotionally eat.
Don’t Fall Into Self-Doubt
Don’t fall for it! Don’t quit moving forward with your weight loss journey and fall into self-doubt.
Don’t go back to your old eating habits to go “back in the fold” with the people who are putting doubt in you.
They probably aren’t doing it consciously but instead are doing this unconsciously, because your success makes them feel uncomfortable. They wish you would go back into your overweight comfort zone because if you do, then THEY will feel better about themselves not doing what they could be doing.
You see, they don’t want to change themselves, but they would like to have different results with their own weight, but without taking any action.
So when they are looking at you and your weight loss success, they feel bad about themselves because they aren’t taking action to change their own weight and eating problems. If you would STOP and fall back, then they will feel better, which is what they really want: to feel better.
But will you feel better if you quit on your weight loss goals?
Keep Moving Forward
Keep moving forward, it’s your life to live and you deserve to feel great and look your best! But if you struggle to stay on track when you get comments from others, if you start to doubt yourself and are afraid your friends will leave if you don’t go back to your old ways of eating, I’ve put together 3 tips to help.
These are 3 tips to help you stay on track when other’s comments put doubt in you and cause you to consider falling back. Employ my three tips when the time is right and stay on track with your success plan to your goal weight.
What to Say When They Criticize Your Weight Loss Journey
Here are three options of what to say when they criticize your weight loss journey.
1.) Thank you for your feedback!
You can simply thank them for their feedback and then stay on track with your healthy eating and exercise plan. Don’t make a big deal out of it and keep moving forward.
2.) I’m feeling really good and have further to go. I could use a walking buddy, do you want to join me?
Maybe they would be willing to join you on your regular walks, it wouldn’t hurt to ask! Or you could ask them if they’d like to join you on your bulk cooking day. That would be another option.
Asking them if they’d like to join you will give them an opportunity to get in action for themselves, if they want to. Either way, I strongly suggest that you continue to move forward and stay focused on your own weight loss journey.
3.) Thank you! What’s the main goal you’re working on right now?
Thank them for their feedback and then turn the focus back to them and the goal they are working on now. Listen to them speak about their goal(s) or if they don’t have a weight loss goal, maybe they will get inspired to create one.
These 3 options give you something to choose from so that you can be prepared if and when anyone criticizes your weight loss journey. The worst ones are those that sound like harmless but they instill self-doubt in you so it’s important to be prepared ahead of time. Another example is “You look great, you don’t need to lose weight!”.
That sounds nice on the surface but when you know you have 25 pounds to go, that comment could give you pause and you could flip yourself right back into unhealthy eating habits, so it’s good to be aware and stay focused on what you really want for yourself.
Weight loss takes time and consistency and it only works over an extended time. Each time you backslide means that your end goal is put off even longer.
Get a Weight Loss Mindset to Stay On Track
When your mindset is strong enough, you won’t fall into self-doubt, excuses, and then backslide into old eating habits even if others criticize your weight loss journey. They could still do that but it won’t bother you if you have a weight loss mindset.
With a weight loss mindset you’ll stay focused on your weight loss journey and living a healthy lifestyle will feel struggle-free. You’ll be in alignment with healthy eating and any doubt coming from others won’t sway you. But you’ll need to take specific action steps to shift into a weight loss mindset.
This is the work that I’ve been coaching clients through since 2009 and when you change your mind it becomes struggle-free to change your body. You can stop binge eating, emotional eating, and more when you heal the root of your overeating behaviors.
