When food is your religion, then what? How do you lose weight?

Now it might sound weird to even think of food as your religion but if you consider how much power you’ve given to food, then it might make a little more sense.

For example, is food your main source of happiness?

Do you feel anxious if you even imagine changing “your food” so that you can lose weight?

Do you have a hard time sticking with a healthy eating plan because you must get back to your comfort zone with your comfort foods?

When food is your religion it’s like you’ve given food an otherworldly power so that it has “supreme control” over you. Food is the source of your everything in your life.

Of course we all need to eat to live, that’s not what this is about because if you are willing to get real, then you will see that sure, you do need to eat to live, but do you have to eat the kinds of foods and the quantity of those foods you consistently eat?

There’s a big difference between eating healthy foods and a reasonable quantity of food in order to thrive, be fit, and be well, vs. eating all kinds of unhealthy foods, you know those types of foods you consider “your food” – those foods that when you even think about “giving them up” in order to lose weight, you begin to quake in your boots.

When you look at it like this, is it maybe possible that food is almost like a religion to you?

The Definition of Religion

In podcast episode #545 I said that I would include the definition of religion that I read in the podcast. I also included the definition of doctrine, here they both are:

Definition of religion:

  1. The belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers, regarded as creating and governing the universe.
  2. A particular variety of such belief, especially when organized into a system of doctrine and practice.
  3. A set of beliefs, values, and practices based on the teachings of a spiritual leader.

Definition of Doctrine:

  1. A principle or body of principles presented for acceptance or belief, as by a religious, political, scientific, or philosophic group; dogma.
  2. A rule or principle of law, especially when established by precedent.
  3. A statement of official government policy, especially in foreign affairs and military strategy.

So when we’re talking about food being your religion, notice in the definitions about the parts that I referred to in my podcast, regarding beliefs, values, and a system of practices.

Your eating behaviors are a system of practices, notice how often you repeat them. It will help to become more self-aware of exactly what you are doing and what you are thinking, since your beliefs about yourself and about food and about your ability to change all began with a thought. Before you can change your beliefs you need to identify what you are thinking since a belief is a thought you’ve thought over and over and over again.
