Today I’m answering a reader question that Leilani (isn’t that a beautiful name?!), a smart reader of Fearless Fat Loss sent to me.
This will be a two-part post – today we’ll look at Leilani’s excellent question and the awareness she has already come to and tomorrow we’ll look at how to create a stronger weight loss affirmation.
Leilani has given us a topic that you might have experienced yourself or maybe you’re even experiencing it today. We’re talking about intellectually knowing that you have a serious health issue – you can’t get away from it because it’s staring you right in the face, however even though you could either cure or greatly mitigate this issue by losing weight you don’t take the action to do it.
You just don’t feel motivated to get healthy and fit and change your lifestyle to get that weight off – your medical issue(s) aren’t enough of a motivator to get you moving.
Leilani’s Story
Go ahead and read Leilani’s story and learn more about where she is at in her journey towards health and fitness:
I have been overweight all my adult life. Being fat makes me feel safe, keeps me from getting close to people. Over the years I’ve lost around 55-60 pounds on weight watchers, but end up regaining. At the moment I’m nearly 300 pounds and have been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, a weak heart. If I don’t get this weight off I may end up having a defibrillator put in. At 47 years of age, I don’t want that. But even that hadn’t been enough to keep me on my plan or change my overeating. I keep telling myself that there must be something really wrong with me that even faced with major health problem I can’t stick to a weight loss program. But it suddenly occurred to me that I’m doing this wrong. Since I keep focusing on what I can’t do, that’s exactly what I’m giving myself. I need to change the way I think, not just the food or exercise portion of my life. If I believe I can lose weight and visualize it, then I can succeed.
I’ve posted the weight I want to be around my house and at work. I’ve come up with a couple affirmations for myself: I am thin, strong and healthy. Extra weight falls off my body forever.
I’ve been trying to figure out an affirmation that will help me wipe out my fear of losing weight. I haven’t been able to figure out anything that sounds strong and makes me feel safe so I can get the weight off and not panic as it comes off…which is the point of this email. I was just wondering if you might have a suggestion I could use. I’m very grateful to have found this site and your articles. Very helpful!
Thanks for your time and help!
Sincerely,
Leilani
Awareness – There MUST be Something RIGHT with Me!
Leilani is spot on with her awareness that by telling herself, “there must be something really wrong with me”, by focusing on what she thinks she “can’t do”, that that’s what she gets more of – evidence that she “can’t do it”! This is great because before you can make changes you first must be aware of where you are at. Leilani has already made a big shift through her awareness and changing her focus.
When you focus on a statement like, “what is wrong with me”, the Universe/your subconscious mind/Life (call it whatever you want, it doesn’t matter 😉 ) will bring you proof of your focus. You can read more about this in my recent post How to Lose Weight with the Law of Attraction – the law of attraction (what you think about most is what you will attract) works in your life whether you believe it or not – you cannot “turn it off”. What’s great is that once you realize this you may as well put it to use and change your focus – put your focus on what you want instead of focusing on what you think you can’t do or on what you don’t want.
Instead of asking yourself “what’s wrong with me” ask a simple question like, “What is Right with me?”, or “How can I improve my health?”, “How can I treat myself with love and respect?”. When you ask questions like this then the Universe will bring you answers and evidence to support these questions.
If you ask “what is right with me” you will focus on all of the healthy actions you are taking to get fit, all of the healthy, positive, supporting thoughts you are thinking, and you will create more of the same. If you ask yourself, “How can I get fit”, you’ll bring the answer to yourself and not only will you bring answers but you will take action. See how this works? This is a really simple example but when you make that small shift in what you ask you will already be working miracles in your life.
Where’s Your Focus?
Remember, whatever you put your focus on is what you will create more of. It doesn’t matter if you believe this or not, it’s just how it is and your evidence of what you focus on most in your life is at this moment surrounding you. Whatever you have in your life today is a result of your focus.
If you want a slim, trim, healthy, fit body then why not put your focus on the whole foods you like to eat that will give you this body? Focus on fun exercise that you enjoy doing. Put your focus there instead of on your “fat feelings” in your body and mind, instead of focusing on the heaviness in your spirit because you have been weighing yourself down with negative thoughts and regrets about where you are today.
Focusing on the past will bring you more of the same experience and focusing on the present (if you don’t like where you are) will also bring you more of the same. Keep your focus on where you are going and that’s where you’ll end up. You can also keep your focus on the good stuff, on everything that you like about yourself and your life and you will get more of that good stuff!
A Stronger Weight Loss Affirmation – Part Two
Tomorrow I’ll address Leilani’s desire to create a stronger weight loss affirmation for herself. She has already taken such a big step with her awareness and shift in focus I devoted an entire post to this portion of her process today. In fact if she wanted to simply forget about a specific affirmation and just continue to focus on what is right about her right now she would naturally create more of that “rightness” and naturally motivate herself to take more and more healthy actions.
Whatever you put your focus on in your life is what you will attract more of – well, there is also the very important piece of allowing the good stuff into your life, that good stuff that you’re focusing on, and you do that by feeling good.
Sound too simple? Depends on where you’re at right now – this is something I work with every day and I can tell you that it gets easier and easier but it does require remaining in the present moment, staying conscious, and paying attention to how you feel instead of going unconscious and reaching for something on the outside (food?) to make yourself feel better. Food isn’t the solution and when you can master feeling good without indulging in self-destructive habits (like overeating 😉 ) then you will truly be able to keep that weight off for good.
