Have you ever heard, “if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all”? I heard that when I was a kid growing up. 😉
In case this is new to you, it’s pretty simple – instead of complaining or spreading negativity, just keep quiet until you’ve got something positive to say, either to someone or about someone.
Well here’s what I’m thinking – what about using that same logic on yourself? Yep, that’s right, instead of criticizing yourself for not exercising, eating that extra helping, or for whatever else you might have eaten, what if instead you stopped the criticism?
Fire your Little Critic
If this idea sounds good to you then you just might have a little critic hanging around (not a little chef, but a little critic, lol), which I can sure relate to myself. So I say that we need to fire that gal or guy, that inner critic, and hire a little self-love mentor instead!
You see, it doesn’t matter how much self-criticism you heap on yourself to try to get yourself to change – you can criticize yourself all day every day telling yourself that you should eat better, exercise more, and on and on, but if your inner critic could help you lose weight, wouldn’t it have helped by now?
If You Don’t Have Anything Nice to Say…
Today’s post is short and sweet since I don’t having anything nice to say about self-criticism. 😉 If you’d like to delve into this topic further then check out my 31 Day Series in Loving Yourself Thin because the quicker you fire your inner critic and stock up on some self-love, the easier it will be for you to get to your goal weight.
filmed my Monday Facetime this morning (we’re so busy up in herre I was trying to get ahead :))and my theme of the week is negative self talk.
THAT SAID, Im not certain Ill use the video as I talked for THREE FULL MINUTES and still had a lot left to say.
love how concise you always are.

I’ve been doing better with the inner critic lately. It’s a real struggle. I really do feel like the negative self-talk is a big part of what kept me chained to an eating disorder for 12 years…

Excellent point! Positive, positive, positive. I try to ignore the “lil” negative guy and take control of my thoughts….

All I can say is: WOW. Thank you SO much for stopping by my blog. I probably never would have found you otherwise. I will be subscribing to your feed–I’ve been looking for a good “get fit” website without it being to “jock-ish” or to product heavy. This is perfect!

Hi Jen,
Couldn’t agree with ya more. I was just doing some writing on this to learn more about my inner critic and the rebellious part of me that I learned about in Shrink Yourself. Yeah, I’m all for firing the critic! 🙂
Hi Mark,
Right, you’ve got the “lil negative guy” instead of a gal, you get what I’m saying. 😉
Hi FD,
Thanks for stopping by here (and for subscribing!) too! 🙂
Yeah, a lot of what I write is from my own experience and I’m not a jock so I can’t really come across that way (LOL).
I also write about topics I research, like processed food ingredients. I like to include all of those areas that have given me issues with the whole weight loss/maintenance puzzle 😉 and I really believe it takes a lifestyle change in mind-body-spirit, the whole kit-n-kaboodle (when’s the last time ya heard that phrase, and where did that come from? LOL)!
